BMW F650 Funduro Review 

The single cylinder BMW F650 Funduro has to be one of my all time favourite motorcycles. I found the little BMW very reliable, maybe at times it could be a little uninspiring, but its such an easy bike to live with, and its also great fun to ride. To coin a phrase that I think totally describes any of the F650 motorcycles.... "It does exactly what is says on tin".

The F650 funduro range of motorcycles were first introduced by the company back in1993 and from the start broke the mould. It was the first single cylinder engine from BMW motorcycles since the 1960's and was also BMW's first ever chain driven motorcycle.

Early BMW F650's came in two forms the F650 Funduro and the F650ST or Strada which eventually spawned into a string of others. The 650 Funduro was a dual purpose on/off road machine and the 650 Strada, having a smaller front wheel and was intended for street use. Both models are powered by Austrian 652 cc single cylinder Rotax engines, and all the original F650's were built in Italy by Aprilla under BMW guidance.

The use of Rotax engines helped turn the BMW F650 into an excellent work horse,with loads of low down torque and good power throughout the rev range. As an everyday motorcycle the F650 is a very neat package, It can cope with town commuting, country riding or motorway cruising without missing a beat, and with such a smooth power delivery, its a very easy motorcycle to ride for beginners or experts alike.

As with the larger BMW motorcycles, there’s no shortage of extra parts and accessories available for all the F650 motorcycles, to give a more personal and distinctive look, but as usual most of these will come at a cost. The standard equipment on both the bikes is a bit sparse but includes clear clocks, an adjustable clutch lever and a centre stand.

For me, any BMW F650 is a top notch, ride to work, everyday bike.It really is such an excellent machine to ride, consistently reliable and of course as its a BMW, has an excellent after sales service. In my opinion there’s very little to complain about on this motorcycle, even if you find yourself a good used BMW F650 with a little care and attention, it will probably have more mileage in it than you.

The BMW F650 GS

I have to say that I liked the BMW F650 GS from the moment the company launched it, (but I've always had quirky taste). The F650GS follows on from the original bikes having the same simplicity in design, easy to maintain, and excellent to ride, this makes all the F650's a good motorcycle for the beginner.
Introducing fuel injection and a new digital engine management system, the single-cylinder four-stroke four-valve water-cooled 650GS engine now produced 50bhp. Pushing the torque up to an impressive 60Nm at 5000 rpm. Adding a new cush-drive damper, to aid smoothness and response the F650GS helps to quell the myth of single-cylinder bikes being basic and crude.
The 650GS Rotax engine has been refined, for better response and control in most riding conditions, so now snatch-free driving is possible, even at very low speeds. The 17.3 litre (3.8 gal) fuel tank has been moved under the rider's seat and this helps to lower the bikes centre of gravity. The steering has better lock and a tighter turning circle, which improves the balance, and now makes the BMW F650 one of the easiest motorcycles to use for urban riding.
Being designed a dual-purpose motorcycle, the suspension on the F650 GS has been strengthened and the front forks now incorporate an extra stabiliser that helps to improve smoothness on rough surfaces, especially when the F650's optional ABS is used.
To further improve off its road capabilities, the F650GS has new 19-inch and 17-inch spoked wheels, a 300mm (11.8in) single-disc front brake with twin-piston floating calipers and a 240mm (9.4in) single-disc rear with a single-piston, floating caliper and both are more than able to bring any BMW F650 to a halt Also Anti-lock brakes (ABS) are available as an optional extra.

The BMW F650CS

Despite of their success in tough Paris-Dakar rally, BMW soon realised nearly all of their F650 Funduro motorcycles spent nearly 99 per cent of their time on the tarmac, so BMW quickly introduced the Strada (Street) version, OK as a stop gap, but in looks,it was just a Funduro with road wheels.
Now BMW have come up with the F650CS. It has a sort of weird Supermoto styling, with bug-eye headlights, sitting in a neat little fairing blending into a fake fuel tank unit. supposedly a perfect bike for commuters and touring riders. Well I'm not sure, and the style jury is still out on this one.
Once again BMW have considered seat height, which is a lowly 780mm (30.7in) and there's an even lower option seat unit at 750mm (29.5in) for the vertically challenged. The fuel tank though slightly smaller at 15 litre (3.3 gal) is in the same place as the F650GS off-roader, and hidden beneath the seat to keep the centre of gravity down low.
The F650CS Rotax-designed power unit and the five-speed gearbox have been carried over from the GS but with a modified air box and exhaust system the maximum power of 50bhp now comes in at 6800rpm. I do believe that there is also a learner 25kW (34bhp) version available. The CS can cover about 200 miles on a tank full and top speed potential is around 110mph, with the ability to cruise at a ton all day.
For me the only outstanding features of the F650CS have to be, the single sided swingarm, new 17" three spoke alloy wheels and a toothed drive belt. The aluminium swing-arm really looks the part and is said to improve the level of torsional stiffness and the toothed belt drive is said to quiet, clean, requires no lubrication, is easy to service, and supposed to last at least twice as long as a drive chain.
Simular to its GS brother the F650CS comes with a single-disc brake at the front, with a two-piston floating calliper and sintered metal brake linings. The rear-wheel brake is also a single disc. Like on all BMW motorcycles, ABS is optional.
Another offering as an optional extra, is the audio system with integrated, weather-proof speakers and an amplifier with both manual and speed-related volume control,and you can use a portable CD, MC or MD player. Just the thing, I think not!!!! Can I have the old Funduro with road wheels back please........
As long as you know enough about the BMW F650 range, you will be able to make good solid, informed choices. So when or if you are ever in the postion of buying a BMW F650 motorcycle, you should have nothing to worry about.
