Several hundred people took part in a paddle-out in front of Junior Seau's Oceanside (San Diego County) home to pay tribute to the former NFL linebacker.
The Los Angeles Times reported that participants at Sunday's seaside memorial included New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who played quarterback for the San Diego Chargers when Seau was the star linebacker.
Seau, 43, committed suicide Wednesday at his home. Seau was an avid surfer who was often seen riding the waves in front of his home. Fans and well-wishers formed a circle across the water and held hands while a prayer was said for him.
They also chanted Seau's name and the number 55, his number at USC and during 20 years in the NFL.
Meanwhile, Seau's family is revisiting its decision to donate his brain for research into football-related injuries, according to Chargers chaplain Shawn Mitchell.
The family, which is of Samoan descent, is consulting with a group of elders on a number of matters. Mitchell said it doesn't mean that the family won't donate Seau's brain for research.
